Manager, Double Edge
When did you start with Double Edge and what’s your role there?
I started with Double Edge as the store manager in November of 2017.
What do you love about Double Edge?
There are so many things that I love about Double Edge that it is hard to pick just one. Over all the thing I love the most is the people I get to work with. We have an amazing team of volunteers and employees, we all have the same work ethic, and we all enjoy life so we get to laugh a lot too.
What sets Double Edge apart from the other thrift shops in the area?
Time and time again our customers tell us we are the best thrift store in the area because we are clean and organized.
Why do you like working at Double Edge?
I like working at Double Edge because I thrive on change, and something is always changing here. For example some days we need to reset the floor for a large furniture donation. We also have the best customers! It’s like we are a little community.
What motivated you to join the team at Double Edge?
Ha! That’s a funny story. When the manager before knew she was leaving she reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in working here. I said absolutely not. (I had much bigger plans for me) She continued to ask me telling me that I would love it. She convinced me to come in for two days. I fell in love within the first three hours!
Double Edge is an extension of Traverse City Christian School. How do you incorporate a Christian Worldview in your work at the Edge?
One of the ways we incorporate a Christian worldview is by playing christian music all day. We get so many comments on our music and the atmosphere here in the store. We also have a prayer box that our customers can ask for prayers and then we pray over those. We work really hard to be a blessing to the community with fair prices while still being a blessing to the school. Being good stewards of our blessings is something we talk about all the time. It is easy to get caught up in higher prices, but when we price with the mind of being a good steward we see our customers happy and our sales go up! It’s awesome that God works that way. One of our volunteers always reminds us that we can’t out give God.
What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your role to help shape the experience of colleagues and customers?
I think one of the assets I bring to Double Edge is my willingness to try something even if it doesn’t work, we just change it again. I do have vision for the store but I’m not tied to doing it one way or another. I like having a team approach, I think it helps us use all of our giftings and talents.
How have you seen God at work at Double Edge?
YES! God moves here all the time from customer generosity to Double Edge meeting clothing or household needs for people in need. My favorite God moment was when a mother of three came into the store one evening. She was trying to shop for christmas gifts but her baby was not having any part of it. They were the only customers in the store at that time so I offered to hold her little boy. She was teary eyed and frustrated. When she handed him over to me she said he didn’t like other people. He let me take him up to our front window and he looked at the flashing lights and never made another sound. She was able to shop for another 20 minutes. She thanked me over and over again with tears in her eyes. I love when we get to love on our customers.
