ACADEMICS
Elementary School at Traverse City Christian School
A private Christian elementary school building strong foundations in every student
KINDERGARTEN – GRADE 5
You remember their first steps, the first word they uttered, the first time they tied their shoes.
And now, here you are, thinking about elementary school — a place where every day brings new opportunities to understand the world around them. You want more than just a good education. You want a school where your child is known, where their confidence grows as they master new skills, and where their faith is nurtured right alongside their curiosity. You want teachers who will speak into their life, reinforcing the same values you teach at home.
At Traverse City Christian School, we understand that choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Our private Christian elementary program provides the supportive environment you’re looking for, with engaging academics, strong biblical foundations, and a close-knit community where students thrive
Below, you’ll discover more about what we offer:
Learning Environment
Unleashing talent. Inspiring unity.
As a parent, you want a learning environment that nurtures your child’s faith and prepares them for the future. At TC Christian, we believe learning should be an adventure — one that helps children see the world with wonder within a framework of biblical truth.
Here, education isn’t shaped by shifting cultural agendas but by timeless principles. Our teachers wear many hats — educator, counselor, mentor, and friend — because nurturing a child’s heart is just as important as shaping their mind.

Small class sizes big opportunities.
With intentional class sizes, every child receives the attention and support they need to thrive. Individualized instruction and hands-on learning go hand in hand. Your child will have opportunities to conduct science experiments, solve real-world math problems, or bring ideas to life.
Reading, writing, and seeing God’s story in it all.
At TC Christian, literacy and math are taught in ways to help students cultivate a love for learning. Through literature-based lessons and Writer’s Workshop (Empowering Writers), your child will strengthen their reading, writing, and communication skills. In math, hands-on activities build strong number sense and critical thinking. Whether analyzing a book or tackling a math challenge, they learn to apply their knowledge with confidence.

Character Supportive in action.
Faith and character formation go beyond the classroom in our learning environment. Through Chapel services, mentorship programs, and service projects, students are encouraged to live out their values. They plant community gardens, pack care kits, or partner with local ministries. In these activities, your child will learn that serving others is a lifelong calling.
A safe, nurturing space.
TC Christian elementary students learn in an environment where they feel supported and known. Rooted in Love and Logic principles, our classrooms foster accountability and Christ-centered guidance. Teachers set clear expectations while encouraging students to take ownership of their actions. As they resolve conflicts or show kindness to a classmate, students develop the skills to become thoughtful individuals — both in school and beyond.

Cultivating a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.
The early years of education lay the groundwork for future life and learning. At TC Christian, we believe elementary school is where confidence is built and curiosity flourishes. Every subject, every lesson, and every interaction is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to succeed.
A Strong Start in Kindergarten
The transition from preschool to kindergarten is an exciting milestone, and our private Christian kindergarten makes it a seamless, joyful experience. In our nurturing environment, children build on their early learning foundation through hands-on discovery, interactive storytelling, and creative play.

A Day in the Life of a TC Christian Student
From the moment the bell rings to the time they head home, students are part of exciting learning experiences that challenge their minds and nurture their hearts. A typical day includes:
Morning kickstart. The day begins with structured classroom time, where students dive into core subjects.
Chapel twice a week. On Mondays and Fridays, students gather for chapel — a time of worship and prayer that guides their daily lives.
Hands-on learning. Whether it’s a science experiment, a writing workshop, or a math challenge, active learning is integrated into their day.
Time to recharge. Lunch and recess give students space to build friendships and enjoy free play. Younger students enjoy an additional recess break in the afternoon.
Specials and enrichment. Art, music, technology, PE, and community time round out the week, helping students develop creativity, coordination, and social-emotional skills.
On Fridays, students experience a half-day schedule, so they can end the week refreshed and ready to dive into their hobbies, weekend activities, and family time.
Support, Connection, and Resources for Growth
We know that you desire a school that partners with your child’s development, and that’s why at TC Christian, we invest in supporting students. An intervention specialist works with children who have IEPs or 504 plans, providing individualized guidance — an uncommon resource in Christian schools. Teachers provide students with the right level of challenge and encouragement to help them achieve academic milestones.
In addition, technology is integrated intentionally, reinforcing core subjects without replacing hands-on learning. Chromebooks are used in the classroom, while technology classes equip students with digital literacy and online safety skills, preparing them for the future.
Beyond academics, strong relationships in our school shape the learning experience. Through the Buddy Program, your child will build meaningful connections with older students during worship, prayer, and service projects. These relationships create a sense of belonging while fostering leadership and mentorship.

We couldn’t imagine our children anywhere but TC Christian. The teachers and staff not only provide an excellent education but also pour into our kids with love and biblical truth. Knowing they are in an environment that nurtures both their minds and hearts is an incredible blessing.
— Josh Knorr, TC Christian Parent

I love watching students grow — not just academically, but in confidence and character. My goal is for every child to leave my classroom knowing they are loved, capable, and created by God for a purpose. Seeing them achieve something they once thought was impossible is the most rewarding part of teaching.
— Carrie Johns, 4th Grade Teacher (17 years of experience)
The best part of teaching is building relationships with my students and their families. Seeing them explore, discover, and grow each day is an incredible joy. When a child lights up because they’ve learned something new or made a connection, it reminds me why I love what I do.
— Deanna Langhorst, Early Childhood Educator (12 years of experience)

Every student has a unique purpose, and I want them to know they are more than their struggles. I strive to create a classroom where differences are valued, challenges are embraced. When a child realizes that their struggles can become their strengths, it’s a powerful moment that shapes their confidence for years to come.
— Colette Nichols, Elementary Teacher (12 years of experience)
