Soggy Battle For Legacy Cup

| May 23, 2019

The morning of the annual TC Christian Veterans Legacy Cup Invitational dawned wet and chilly.  Undeterred by the elements, baseball and softball players representing Traverse City, Newberry, Ellsworth, and Pine River converged on Traverse City Christian for a day of sport.  Hard fought games and good sportsmanship were the order of the day.

The baseball team lost to Newberry 7-4 in the opener before taking down Ellsworth 4-3 in the consolation game via a walk-off, earning third for the tournament. Pine River beat Newberry in the final.  Over on the softball diamond, the girls were racking up some serious runs and ultimately won their tournament, downing Newberry 9-0 in the opener and defeating Ellsworth 17-2 in the championship final.  A great result for the ladies.

The Cup is a terrific – and unique – tournament to honor veterans. Play opened with an Honor Guard and National Anthem, and at 12:45 pm all play stopped to honor our Veterans on Legacy Field, with the Consolation and Championship Games following immediately thereafter.   All proceeds raised on the day went to Reining Liberty Ranch, a local organization that helps veterans and their families.

Thank you to our sponsors, to the officials, volunteers, fans, and players who braved the elements, and especially to our veterans who make days like this possible.  Thank you!
